Landvaettir (Land Spirits)

While the term Land Spirit can refer to any type of spirit, when we use the term Landvaettir we are referring to a kind of being who connects to large areas of land in general. This may not just be forests, lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, or mountains but instead a general connection to the energies of the land, being as at home in grass lands as they would be in a sprawling forest. Landvaettir can be more animal, or more human, and range in appearance greatly. Some appear just as another of the kind of being they are represented as, while others appear with some aspects of the earth, land, or nature reflected in this appearance. All Landvaettir have a massive connection to nature as a general force of power. Where more specific forms have a connection to a singular point of nature, such as mountains or rivers, Landvaettir have an equally strong connection to ALL of nature. They tend toward being more mystics, and more mystical, than other forms of beings. They are an innate essence of nature, and exists in areas of the Norse realms that are most convergent with nature energies. They have a kind of natural playfulness and curiosity to them. Their communities tend to be more “gathering places”, though they do have central hubs at times. They will often connect to a large area of land in our realm, or other dense material realms, and act as guardians or guides. Landvaettir that seek to work with humans see a value in helping us connect to nature, grow our own strength, and cultivate a calm steadiness. Those that work with humans also gain an appreciation for our emotional states, and often have a deep compassion for our suffering, and appreciation for our joy. The tend toward innately helpful, and seek concepts of justice over retribution, but as with all other things there are always exceptions to generalities.
